The fragmentary nature of this passage makes it impossible to ascertain the geographical location of the Weng people, who are not mentioned in other extant sources. But they are likely to have been one of the Southeast Asian peoples. This passage suggests that dark-skinned peoples were enslaved by the Chinese as early as the first century CE.

The Weng people have extremely white teeth and eyes, but their faces and bodies are shiny black, like lacquer. When used as slaves, they are very hardworking.
